Already embroiled in debates over health care, the energy bill and an Argentine escapade, Democrats and Republicans will compete at 7 p.m. Friday night in the ultimate showdown: the annual DNC vs. RNC softball game.
“We feel good about our chances,” said Hari Sevugan, national press secretary for the Democratic National Committee. “With all their recent troubles, we understand if the Republican bench is a little short.”
The RNC has won the last three meetings. But the team enters the game this year, at Guy Mason Park in Georgetown, with little preparation, having played just one game so far, a 7-2 win last Thursday. The DNC is 5-1.
“We are confident heading into [Friday] night, especially since we hear the DNC team is like the stimulus package — slow, ineffective and fall way short of expectations,” Republican National Committee Press Secretary Gail Gitcho said. “We fully expect their pitchers to serve up more softballs than an ABC prime-time health care special.”
The two press secretaries have placed a wager on the game. Both offices put out Monday morning press briefings. The RNC sends out “On Deck,” a morning e-mail. The DNC’s e-mail blast is “Breakfast with Brandi,” named after deputy press secretary Brandi Hoffine.
On Monday, the winner gets to write the lead entry on the loser’s e-mail. And the loser must use the score of the game as their e-mail signature all day.
